 Letter from the Executive Director

Dennis Clark SOLAS AWARD Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are extremely happy to announce that our 7th Annual Dennis Clark SOLAS Awards Dinner will be held on November 19, 2007 at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel at 17th and Race Streets. This year we are honoring outstanding leaders in health care:

  • Dr. Paul Farmer, Co-Founder of Partners In Health
  • Daniel J. Hilferty, President and Chief Executive Officer of the AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies
  • The Honorable Estelle Richman, Secretary of Public Welfare for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
These distinguished recipients have helped to increase access to health care to the underserved, and in turn have created a stronger workforce and healthier community.

Immigrants face many barriers in accessing healthcare, including language, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with the complexities of health insurance.

The Welcoming Center believes that a strong workforce is built on healthy workers. In the U.S., most people get access to healthcare through their jobs. We increase access to healthcare by connecting immigrants to employment opportunities that offer health benefits, and providing referrals and information for those with healthcare questions.

We need creative thinking and innovative solutions to improve the health and welfare of all members of our community -- especially those most vulnerable.

Will you support us?
To volunteer for, attend, or help with our SOLAS event, contact Isabelle Rambo at 215-557-2845.

We hope to see you on November 19.

Anne O'Callaghan

 New Rules for Employing Immigrants

Elizabeth Surin Recently, the federal government issued new rules regarding the employment of immigrants. These rules include stricter methods of verifying work authorization and quicker turn-around for reporting workers identified as not having the proper work documents.

In light of these new rules, the Welcoming Center held a special legal information session for employers. Conducted by immigration expert Elizabeth Surin, Esq. of Morley, Surin & Griffin PC, the session answered questions such as:
  • What paperwork do I need to fill out when hiring an immigrant?
  • Can I hire someone who doesn't have a green card?
  • How can I be sure I am in compliance with the law?
The Welcoming Center can also assist employers in filling their staffing needs with legally authorized workers by providing employers with appropriate job candidates for open positions. We have recently created a Job Opening form, which will help us make the best match possible for employers, whether they are looking for a welder or a customer service representative, a housekeeper or a business analyst.

The form is available on our website or via fax by calling 215-557-2626.

 Groundbreaking Work in West Philadelphia

West Phila Mural The Welcoming Center is engaging in some groundbreaking work in West Philadelphia. Alongside our community partners, we are developing Welcoming Center West, a centralized resource base and meeting place for multicultural community-building activities. This will be a space for the immigrant and native-born residents of West Philadelphia to create opportunities for ongoing inter-ethnic collaboration.

Projects like this are rare -- there are very few in the U.S. -- and we are excited about the opportunity to work together to build a stronger West Philadelphia. We will keep you updated about this initiative -- and if you are interested in designing a cross-cultural program with us or would like to showcase the inter-ethnic work you are doing in West Philadelphia, please contact Fatimah Muhammad at 215-557-2858.

Find a Hospital that Speaks Your Language
 A New Guide

Language Access Services Imagine that your Russian-immigrant father is in the hospital for heart surgery. Or your Spanish-speaking sister-in-law is about to give birth. If they are going to receive good care, hospital professionals must be able to communicate with them. But it can be hard for busy staff even to know what interpretation services or bilingual staff are available in their own hospitals.

How can you find out what Language Access services are available? Check out the definitive guide, just completed by recent Penn State graduate Mariana Ortega. The guide, Finding Language Access Services in Philadelphia Hospitals, is available upon request from the university's Center for Intercultural Leadership and Communication (cilc@psu.edu, or 215-881-7400).

The guide may also be reprinted for free by local nonprofits. For details, contact the author at muo110@yahoo.com.

 Building Our Capacity

Philadelphia Foundation The Welcoming Center is working hard to become a more efficiently-run organization. We want our staff to be better trained, we want to measure our progress more accurately, and we want to use data to better serve our clients. Recently we have received three grants that are helping us do just that:

From the Allen Hilles Fund comes a grant to train our Bridging Cultures mentors. Program Coordinator Jennifer Chiu is working with experts from the Center for Literacy and others to develop a training curriculum that will provide hands-on literacy skills development and modeling opportunities. This training will help our mentors acquire the skills necessary to meet the needs of immigrant students.

The Philadelphia Foundation's Walter E. Hering Fund provided an organizational effectiveness grant that we will use to determine the best strategies to evaluate our programs, what additional data we need to collect, and what reports we should produce.

And from the Pew Charitable Trusts, we received a capacity building grant that will help us develop the technical capacity to produce reports and carry out our evaluation strategies.

We are grateful to all of our funders who see merit in our work and who help us increase our capacity, become stronger, and serve our clients more effectively.
