Immigration in Pennsylvania

Immigration Reform

Through the years, immigration has defined America. Successful, vibrant cities such as New York, Chicago, and Boston have flourished because of their welcoming nature towards immigrants. Immigrants are here because they want to better their lives. Immigrants add diversity, talent and a different perspective to workplaces. Whether they are highly skilled or not, they contribute to our economy, and are more often than not hardworking individuals determined to succeed.

Yet, there is a faction who believe that immigrants should not be here. The issue of immigration is ripe for discussion right now. Our laws on immigration are archaic. They need to reflect the current climate of our economy. Currently in the United States, there are about 11 million undocumented workers. Most of these immigrants are here simply to make a better life for themselves — better than the dollar-a-day they might be earning in their home country.

Creating legal channels for immigrants help not only the economy, but also the employers who otherwise might have a hard time operating their businesses without adequate workers. Setting up realistic enforcement laws will also help with national security concerns. The answer does not lie in building a wall around our borders.

Here in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (PICC) is a diverse coalition of 50 member organizations and numerous individuals who represent the needs of immigrants, migrants, refugees and other New Americans living in Pennsylvania. PICC has numerous advocacy committees working to advocate for the rights of immigrants. Sensible immigration reform policies are critical.

An immigration bill is currently being debated on the Senate floor. It is critical that those who support immigration contact their senators. Phone calls are recommended.

Contact Senator Specter and Senator Bob Casey to express to them the importance of immigration reform.
